Oyster Copper Backsplash — Hand-Hammered Raw Bar Wall Art & Coastal Kitchen Decor

The oyster is the only food that is eaten alive. It is also the only food that has been continuously eaten by humans for at least 164,000 years — the oldest evidence of oyster consumption comes from a cave on the southern coast of South Africa, where Homo sapiens were eating oysters before they left Africa. The Romans farmed them. The French built an entire coastal culture around them. The American raw bar is one of the great institutions of the Eastern Seaboard. The oyster is the most historically continuous and most gastronomically prestigious shellfish in the world.

A hand-hammered copper backsplash of oysters in raised relief on a wave-textured background — the oysters rendered in dimensional metalwork, the layered ridges of the shell built up in copper relief, the rough exterior and the smooth interior visible in the depth of the hammer work, the wave texture of the background placing the oysters in the tidal zone where they grow — made by our family using traditional chasing and repoussé techniques passed through generations. The oyster shell is the composition: the geological layers of the shell, the way the valves fit together, the way the oysters cluster on the reef — all of it visible in the relief. Available in all 15 finishes. Over 10,000 pieces made.

The Eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) — the oyster of the Chesapeake Bay, the Long Island Sound, the Gulf of Maine, and the Gulf of Mexico — has been the defining shellfish of the American East Coast since the first European settlers arrived and found oyster reefs so large they were navigational hazards. The Pacific oyster (Magallana gigas) — introduced to the Pacific Northwest from Japan in the 1920s — is now the most widely farmed oyster in the world. The Kumamoto (Magallana sikamea), the Olympia (Ostrea lurida), the Belon (Ostrea edulis) of Brittany — every great oyster-growing coast has its own species, its own terroir, its own culture. This panel belongs to all of them.

What Can You Order With This Design?

① Single backsplash or wall art piece — select your size above
The oysters in your exact size and finish. Choose from the sizes listed, or reach out with your measurements — we’ll add your size and notify you when it’s ready. Note your finish preference at checkout — we’ll send a digital preview before production begins.

② Full coastal kitchen — the oyster bar kitchen
Oysters above the stove, the wave texture and shell motifs continuing across the sink wall and window wall — all in the same finish, designed as one continuous tidal composition. The kitchen that belongs to the waterfront home, the oyster farm, or the coastal restaurant. Send us straight-on photos of your kitchen walls and we’ll design the full set, render it into your space, and quote the complete project. No commitment required.

③ Raw bar, seafood restaurant, or oyster bar feature wall
Oysters at full wall scale on the wall behind the raw bar or the dining room of the oyster restaurant — the composition that belongs to the space where oysters are shucked and served. Contact us with your dimensions for an exact quote.

④ Custom shellfish composition — reach out
A specific oyster species — Eastern, Pacific, Kumamoto, Olympia, Belon — rendered with the specific shell character of that variety, oysters with clams and mussels for the full bivalve composition, oysters with a shucker’s knife and a lemon for the raw bar still life, oysters with seaweed and barnacles for the full tidal reef composition, or your oyster farm name or raw bar name worked into the shell composition. Same process, completely custom. Just reach out.

Complete the Look

A full oyster bar kitchen. Oysters above the stove, the tidal wave texture wrapping the sink wall and window wall, the range hood clad in the same finish — the kitchen that feels like the back room of the best raw bar on the coast.

A raw bar or oyster restaurant wall. Oysters at full wall scale behind the bar — the geological layers of the shell filling the wall, the wave texture suggesting the tidal flat where they grew. The wall that makes every oyster taste better.

A beach house or waterfront home sign. Your property name, your oyster farm name, or your family name — hand-hammered in relief with an oyster shell border. The sign beside the door of the home that belongs to the water.

A dining room feature wall. Oysters at dining room scale — the most gastronomically prestigious and most quietly sophisticated shellfish composition in the catalog — on the wall of the room where the best meals happen.

Materials

Every Natuross backsplash is handcrafted from real 24-gauge copper or brass over a rigid composite backing, creating a finished thickness of approximately ¼ inch.

The result is lightweight, rigid, and designed for long-term use in kitchens and other living spaces.

Each backsplash is sealed with a clear protective finish to help resist moisture, fingerprints, cooking splashes, and everyday wear.

For many years, Natuross has specialized in handcrafted copper kitchen backsplashes, creating more than 10,000 custom pieces installed in homes across the United States.

Custom Sizes & Layouts

Every backsplash is made specifically for your kitchen.

Order a single backsplash behind the stove, matching side panels beneath your cabinets, or a complete kitchen backsplash designed for your full layout.

Outlets, switches, pot fillers, windows, vents, and other cutouts can usually be incorporated into the design.

If your exact size is not listed, simply send us your approximate width × height after ordering. We usually add custom sizes quickly.

For the best fit, measure the finished opening and subtract approximately ⅛ inch from each side. This small installation allowance is normally unnoticeable and helps create an easier installation and professional result.

Design

Choose from one of the largest collections of handcrafted copper backsplash designs available, including trees, wildlife, landscapes, botanical, decorative, symbol, and personalized designs.

Every design can be handcrafted in any available finish and adapted to your measurements.

Looking for something unique? Simply tell us your design idea when ordering. If you have an inspiration image, you may upload it as well.

We create your custom design for approval before production begins.

Every order includes a digital preview, and production begins only after you approve the design.

When your backsplash is complete, we also send photos of the finished work for final approval before shipping.

Installation

Most customers install their backsplash in less than an hour.

Choose from Adhesive Mount, Screw Mount, or Hanging Wire installation.

Adhesive Mount is the most popular choice for kitchen backsplashes and is suitable for most properly prepared drywall, tile, wood, stone, brick, and metal surfaces.

Installation instructions are included with every order.

Care & Cleaning

Natuross backsplashes are designed specifically for kitchens and have been installed behind thousands of stoves and ranges.

Each backsplash is sealed with a clear protective finish that helps keep grease and cooking splashes on the surface, where they can be wiped away with a soft cloth, warm water, and mild dish soap.

No polishing or special maintenance is required under normal household use.

Production & Delivery

After your order is placed, we review the details and usually prepare your digital design preview within one business day.

Once you approve the design, your backsplash is handcrafted specifically for your order. Production typically takes about three weeks, although rush production may be available depending on our workshop schedule.

Before shipping, we send photos of your completed backsplash for final approval.

Orders ship with tracking and are typically delivered about one month after the order is placed.

From your first message to final delivery, our goal is to make ordering a custom copper kitchen backsplash simple, personal, and worry-free.
