Kitchen Utensils Copper Backsplash — Hand-Hammered Farmhouse & Chef’s Kitchen Wall Art

The kitchen utensils panel is the only backsplash in the catalog where the subject is the kitchen itself. Not a flower, not an animal, not a landscape — the tools of the cook: the hanging ladle, the pot on the stove, the pitcher on the shelf, the spoon that has stirred every meal this kitchen has ever made. The backsplash that says, without any ambiguity: this is a kitchen, and the kitchen is the heart of this home.

A hand-hammered copper backsplash and wall art piece of hanging kitchen utensils above a steaming pot, pitchers, a spoon, and classic kitchen tools, framed by decorative leaves in raised relief — the utensils hanging in a row at the top, the pot and pitchers below, the leaves completing the frame — built up from a flat copper sheet one hammer stroke at a time by our family using traditional chasing and repoussé techniques passed through generations. The utensils, the pot, the pitchers, and the copper field are the composition: the tools of the kitchen as the subject, the warm metal as the ground that holds them. Available in all 15 finishes. Over 10,000 pieces made.

The kitchen utensil as a decorative subject has its roots in the still life tradition of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish painting — the pronkstilleven, the display still life, where the copper pot, the pewter pitcher, the hanging ladle, and the earthenware bowl were arranged to demonstrate the wealth and the domestic abundance of the household. Pieter Aertsen’s Meat Stall (1551), Frans Snyders’ kitchen scenes, and the copper pot paintings of Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin (18th century France) established the kitchen utensil as one of the most enduring and most materially specific subjects in the Western decorative arts tradition. In the American farmhouse tradition, the hanging utensils — the cast iron skillet, the copper pot, the wooden spoon — are the defining objects of the kitchen that is organized around the act of cooking. This panel puts those objects on the wall — in copper relief, where they have always belonged.

Installation & Care

Installation — three methods:

  • Adhesive — stick directly over existing tile, drywall, wood, or stone using any standard construction adhesive. Most popular method. Most customers install in under an hour.
  • Screw mount — for large, heavy, or outdoor panels. Ships with screws and decorative caps included.
  • Hanging wire — for wall art, signs, and removable installations.

For multi-piece panels: install the central piece first, borders second.

Care:

Wipe with a soft damp cloth. For grease or cooking splashes, warm water and mild dish soap. No polishing, waxing, or re-sealing — ever. The finish you receive is the finish it keeps.
