The Great Wave Copper Backsplash — Hokusai — Hand-Hammered Wall Art
Hokusai’s Great Wave — the most recognized image in the history of art — hand-hammered in raised copper relief. The towering wave curls at the crest, the foam breaking into claws at the tips, the fishing boats small and helpless in the troughs below, Mount Fuji small and calm in the distance. Every element of the original woodblock print translated into copper: the wave’s curve, the layered water beneath it, the boats, the mountain. The image that has hung in museums for two centuries — now on your wall, in copper, made to your exact dimensions.
Hand-hammered from flat copper sheet in our family workshop using traditional chasing and repoussé techniques. Every wave curl, every foam claw, every boat formed by hand. Made to your exact dimensions. 15 finishes. Over 10,000 pieces installed.

Full Wall Kitchen Backsplash
Most customers order The Great Wave centered behind the stove — and then add side panels to complete the full wall from cabinet to cabinet.
Center panel — behind the stove
The Great Wave sized to the width of your range — the crest of the wave centered above the burners, Mount Fuji in the upper right, the boats in the lower troughs.
Left and right side panels — extending to the cabinets
The side panels carry the open ocean — rolling waves continuing outward from the center scene, the water extending to the cabinet edges. The full wall reads as one continuous seascape, The Great Wave at the center, the ocean stretching to both sides.
How to order the full wall
Send us the total width of your wall and the height — or just send a photo. We’ll design the full set, show you a digital mockup of the complete wall, and quote the full project before you order anything.
Complete the Look
The Great Wave buyer tends to have a strong aesthetic — Japanese, coastal, or art-forward. These are the designs that belong in the same home:
Sink wall — koi fish panel
Two or three koi swimming in opposite directions, water ripples surrounding them — the Japanese water theme continuing behind the sink in a calmer, more intimate form. Same finish as the stove wall.
Above the fireplace — Mount Fuji panel
Mount Fuji centered on a large panel above the mantle — the mountain that appears small in the background of The Great Wave now given its full scale. The two panels share a world: the wave in the kitchen, the mountain above the fire.
Bathroom — Japanese crane vanity panel
A pair of Japanese cranes in flight above water — a slim horizontal panel running the full length of the vanity. The same Japanese aesthetic in the most serene room in the house.
Bedroom — cherry blossom headboard panel
A cherry blossom branch in full bloom centered on the wall behind the bed — the Japanese aesthetic in its most delicate form. The bedroom carries the same world as the kitchen, in a completely different mood.
Entryway — Japanese wave border panel
A continuous seigaiha (overlapping wave scale) pattern running the full width of the entryway wall — the traditional Japanese wave motif as a repeating border. The house announces its aesthetic before anyone reaches the kitchen.
Send us photos of your walls and we’ll show you what we’d design for each space — with a digital mockup before you order anything.
