Grapevine Copper Backsplash — Hand-Hammered Vineyard & Wine Cellar Kitchen Wall Art

The grapevine is the oldest cultivated plant in the Western world — older than the olive, older than the fig, older than the wheat field. The vine has been growing beside the human table for eight thousand years, since the first wine was pressed in the Caucasus and the first amphora was sealed in ancient Georgia. In copper relief, the vine scrolls and the grape clusters become the most specifically wine-culture and most table-specific botanical backsplash in the catalog — the wall art that belongs in the kitchen that takes the table seriously.

A hand-hammered copper backsplash and wall art piece of graceful vine scrolls and clusters of grapes, framed by a decorative vine border in raised relief — the grape clusters centered in the composition, the vine scrolls sweeping outward, the border completing the frame — built up from a flat copper sheet one hammer stroke at a time by our family using traditional chasing and repoussé techniques passed through generations. The vine, the grapes, and the copper field are the composition: the oldest cultivated plant as the subject, the warm metal as the ground that holds it. Available in all 15 finishes. Over 10,000 pieces made.

The grapevine (Vitis vinifera) — cultivated for wine production for approximately 8,000 years, originating in the South Caucasus region of present-day Georgia and Armenia — is the most symbolically loaded plant in the Western tradition. In Greek mythology, the grapevine is the gift of Dionysus, the god of wine, festivity, and the liberation of the spirit. In the New Testament, the vine is the central metaphor of the Gospel of John: “I am the true vine” (John 15:1). In Roman decorative arts, the grapevine scroll — the rinceau — is the most widely used ornamental border in the entire tradition, appearing on the friezes of the Ara Pacis Augustae (13 BC), on the mosaics of Ravenna, on the carved stone capitals of the Romanesque church, and on the painted ceilings of the Italian Renaissance. The grapevine in copper relief, on the wall of the kitchen or the wine cellar, is the most historically grounded and most table-specific botanical backsplash in the catalog.

Installation & Care

Installation — three methods:

  • Adhesive — stick directly over existing tile, drywall, wood, or stone using any standard construction adhesive. Most popular method. Most customers install in under an hour.
  • Screw mount — for large, heavy, or outdoor panels. Ships with screws and decorative caps included.
  • Hanging wire — for wall art, signs, and removable installations.

For multi-piece panels: install the central piece first, borders second.

Care:

Wipe with a soft damp cloth. For grease or cooking splashes, warm water and mild dish soap. No polishing, waxing, or re-sealing — ever. The finish you receive is the finish it keeps.
