Eastern Hemlock Tree Copper Panel — Hand-Hammered Pennsylvania & Appalachian Wall Art
The Eastern Hemlock is the state tree of Pennsylvania. It can live for 800 years. It creates the coolest, darkest, most cathedral-like forest in the Eastern United States — the hemlock ravine. An invasive insect called the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid is killing them. Scientists are racing to save them.
A copper wall panel of the Eastern Hemlock — the tiny flat needles with white stripes beneath, the gracefully drooping branch tips, the weeping leader of the most shade-tolerant and most ecologically essential conifer of the Eastern Appalachian forest — hand-hammered in real copper sheet by our family using traditional chasing and repoussé techniques passed through generations. The tiny flat needles and the gracefully drooping branch tips are the composition: those distinctive flat needles rendered in dimensional metalwork, the drooping branch tips and weeping leader built up in fine relief, the quiet endurance of a tree that can grow in near-total darkness for decades, waiting, and then live for 800 years when the light finally comes. In Green Copper or Natural Copper, the deep forest-green tones echo the real tree. Every needle, every drooping tip, every detail a separate hammer stroke, thousands of them. Over 10,000 pieces made.
The Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is the state tree of Pennsylvania and one of the most ecologically important conifers in the Eastern United States. It is the most shade-tolerant large tree in the Eastern forest — it can grow in near-total darkness for decades, waiting for a gap in the canopy. Hemlock ravines — the cool, dark stream valleys where Eastern Hemlocks dominate — are among the most distinctive and most ecologically rich habitats in the Appalachian Mountains, providing cold-water refugia for brook trout and other cold-water species. The Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (Adelges tsugae) — an invasive insect from Japan — has killed millions of Eastern Hemlocks across the Eastern US since its introduction in the 1950s. Scientists are developing biological controls — including predatory beetles from Japan — to save the remaining trees. Specimens over 500 years old have been recorded. The most shade-tolerant, most ecologically essential, and most actively threatened conifer in the Eastern United States.

An Eastern Hemlock in a hemlock ravine scene with a cold mountain stream and brook trout, an Eastern Hemlock in winter with snow on the drooping branches, an Eastern Hemlock grove with the cathedral canopy and filtered light, a conservation composition honoring the fight to save the Eastern Hemlock from the Woolly Adelgid, an Eastern Hemlock branch botanical study with flat needles and small cones — or a completely different Appalachian or Eastern forest conifer: Fraser fir, red spruce, or anything that matters to you. Or a personalized panel: your family name designed as a full copper composition, with the Eastern Hemlock as the central subject, in the same finish. Not a sign — a piece of art that carries your name. Same process, completely custom. Just reach out.

Complete the Look
A copper panel above your fireplace. The Eastern Hemlock, larger, drooping branches spanning above the mantel in Green Copper. The most shade-tolerant and most ecologically essential focal point in the Eastern conifer range — the tree that creates the coolest, darkest, most cathedral-like forest in the Appalachians, at full scale in copper, above the fire.
A hemlock ravine conservation composition. The Eastern Hemlock in a full hemlock ravine scene — the cool dark stream, the cathedral canopy, the brook trout in the cold water — in Green Copper. The most ecologically specific and most conservation-resonant Appalachian panel in the catalog. Above the main wall of the home or study that carries that reverence for what is being lost.
Your family name in copper. Not a sign — a designed panel. Your surname hand-hammered in relief, with the Eastern Hemlock as the central subject, in the same finish as the main panel. It goes by the front door or above the entryway. Every person who enters sees it first.
A living room or dining room panel. A coordinated Appalachian mountain forest scene — a Fraser fir, a red spruce, a yellow birch — in the same finish as the Eastern Hemlock. The home with a consistent visual language of the Appalachian forest and the Eastern mountain conifer tradition.
If you're thinking about more than one piece: reach out before you order. We'll design everything together and give you project pricing for the full set.

Every backsplash is made specifically for your kitchen.
