Celtic Knot Copper Backsplash — Hand-Hammered Irish & Scottish Heritage Kitchen & Fireplace Wall Art
The Celtic knot has no beginning and no end. The interlace passes over and under itself in a continuous path that returns to its own origin — the most complete geometric expression of eternity in the decorative arts tradition. In copper relief, the raised lines of the knotwork catch the light differently at every hour of the day, making this the most dynamically lit and most texturally specific geometric backsplash in the catalog.
A hand-hammered copper backsplash and wall art piece of an intricate circular Celtic knot at the center, framed by a woven knotwork border in raised relief — the circular knot centered in the composition, the interlace passing over and under itself in a continuous path, the woven border completing the frame — built up from a flat copper sheet one hammer stroke at a time by our family using traditional chasing and repoussé techniques passed through generations. The knotwork, the circular form, and the copper field are the composition: the interlace as the subject, the eternity as the meaning, the warm metal as the ground that holds both. Available in all 15 finishes. Over 10,000 pieces made.
The Celtic knotwork interlace — the continuous, non-terminating pattern of over-and-under weaving — appears in the illuminated manuscripts of the Irish monastic tradition: the Book of Kells (c. 800 AD, Trinity College Dublin), the Lindisfarne Gospels (c. 715 AD, British Library), and the Book of Durrow (c. 680 AD, Trinity College Dublin). The knotwork appears on the high crosses of Ireland — the Cross of Muiredach at Monasterboice (c. 923 AD), the Cross of the Scriptures at Clonmacnoise — on the carved stone panels of the Pictish tradition of Scotland, and on the metalwork of the Ardagh Chalice (c. 8th century, National Museum of Ireland) and the Tara Brooch (c. 700 AD, National Museum of Ireland). The circular knot — the triquetra, the quaternary knot, the Solomon’s knot — is the most specifically Celtic and most symbolically complete form of the knotwork tradition: the circle as the frame of eternity, the interlace as the path that has no end. In copper, the knotwork becomes a tactile object — the raised lines catching the light, the shadows deepening the interlace, the whole composition changing with the hour of the day.
How This Differs From Our Sunburst Copper Backsplash
- Celtic Knot Copper Backsplash (this panel) — the knotwork IS the composition — the circular interlace as the primary subject, the woven border as the frame — the most purely Celtic and most geometrically specific panel in the catalog
- Sunburst Copper Backsplash — the solar symbol as the primary subject, the Celtic knotwork as the border — the sun and the Celtic tradition combined

Custom Sizes & Layouts
Every backsplash is made specifically for your kitchen.
Order a single backsplash behind the stove, matching side panels beneath your cabinets, or a complete kitchen backsplash designed for your full layout.
Outlets, switches, pot fillers, windows, vents, and other cutouts can usually be incorporated into the design.
If your exact size is not listed, simply send us your approximate width × height after ordering. We usually add custom sizes quickly.
For the best fit, measure the finished opening and subtract approximately ⅛ inch from each side. This small installation allowance is normally unnoticeable and helps create an easier installation and professional result.
