Bison in Valley Copper Backsplash — Hand-Hammered American West Wildlife & Cabin Wall Art

The bison is the most specifically American animal in the catalog — and the most historically weighted. Sixty million bison once roamed the Great Plains from Canada to Texas, the largest land animal herd in the history of the world. By 1889, fewer than a thousand remained. The bison on the wall of the American home is not just wildlife art — it is a statement about the land, the history, and the resilience of the animal that defines the American West.

A hand-hammered copper backsplash and wall art piece of a herd of bison grazing in a valley against the backdrop of sweeping mountains in raised relief — the bison centered in the composition, the herd spread across the valley floor, the mountain range completing the background — built up from a flat copper sheet one hammer stroke at a time by our family using traditional chasing and repoussé techniques passed through generations. The bison, the valley, the mountains, and the copper field are the composition: the most American animal as the subject, the Great Plains landscape as the setting, the warm metal as the ground that holds both. Available in all 15 finishes. Over 10,000 pieces made.

The American bison (Bison bison) — the largest land animal in North America, with bulls weighing up to 2,000 lbs — once numbered approximately 60 million animals on the Great Plains, the largest aggregation of large mammals on earth in recorded history. The systematic slaughter of the bison between 1870 and 1889 — driven by the hide trade, the railroad, and deliberate US government policy to destroy the food supply of the Plains nations — reduced the population to fewer than 1,000 animals by 1889. The recovery of the bison — from fewer than 1,000 in 1889 to approximately 500,000 today, largely through the efforts of the American Bison Society (founded 1905 by Theodore Roosevelt and William Hornaday) — is the most significant wildlife conservation success story in American history. The bison was designated the National Mammal of the United States by the National Bison Legacy Act, signed into law by President Obama on May 9, 2016. In the art of the American West, the bison appears in the paintings of George Catlin (Buffalo Bull, Grazing on the Prairie, 1832), Albert Bierstadt, and Frederic Remington — the defining subject of the Great Plains landscape tradition. This panel puts the bison on the wall — in copper, in the full authority of the American West.

Materials

Every Natuross backsplash is handcrafted from real 24-gauge copper or brass over a rigid composite backing, creating a finished thickness of approximately ¼ inch.

The result is lightweight, rigid, and designed for long-term use in kitchens and other living spaces.

Each backsplash is sealed with a clear protective finish to help resist moisture, fingerprints, cooking splashes, and everyday wear.

For many years, Natuross has specialized in handcrafted copper kitchen backsplashes, creating more than 10,000 custom pieces installed in homes across the United States.

Custom Sizes & Layouts

Every backsplash is made specifically for your kitchen.

Order a single backsplash behind the stove, matching side panels beneath your cabinets, or a complete kitchen backsplash designed for your full layout.

Outlets, switches, pot fillers, windows, vents, and other cutouts can usually be incorporated into the design.

If your exact size is not listed, simply send us your approximate width × height after ordering. We usually add custom sizes quickly.

For the best fit, measure the finished opening and subtract approximately ⅛ inch from each side. This small installation allowance is normally unnoticeable and helps create an easier installation and professional result.

Design

Choose from one of the largest collections of handcrafted copper backsplash designs available, including trees, wildlife, landscapes, botanical, decorative, symbol, and personalized designs.

Every design can be handcrafted in any available finish and adapted to your measurements.

Looking for something unique? Simply tell us your design idea when ordering. If you have an inspiration image, you may upload it as well.

We create your custom design for approval before production begins.

Every order includes a digital preview, and production begins only after you approve the design.

When your backsplash is complete, we also send photos of the finished work for final approval before shipping.

Installation

Most customers install their backsplash in less than an hour.

Choose from Adhesive Mount, Screw Mount, or Hanging Wire installation.

Adhesive Mount is the most popular choice for kitchen backsplashes and is suitable for most properly prepared drywall, tile, wood, stone, brick, and metal surfaces.

Installation instructions are included with every order.

Care & Cleaning

Natuross backsplashes are designed specifically for kitchens and have been installed behind thousands of stoves and ranges.

Each backsplash is sealed with a clear protective finish that helps keep grease and cooking splashes on the surface, where they can be wiped away with a soft cloth, warm water, and mild dish soap.

No polishing or special maintenance is required under normal household use.

Production & Delivery

After your order is placed, we review the details and usually prepare your digital design preview within one business day.

Once you approve the design, your backsplash is handcrafted specifically for your order. Production typically takes about three weeks, although rush production may be available depending on our workshop schedule.

Before shipping, we send photos of your completed backsplash for final approval.

Orders ship with tracking and are typically delivered about one month after the order is placed.

From your first message to final delivery, our goal is to make ordering a custom copper kitchen backsplash simple, personal, and worry-free.
