The tree in relief above a fireplace is one of the oldest architectural traditions in the Western home. The over-mantel — the space above the fireplace surround — has been the most prominent decorative surface in the domestic interior since the Renaissance. In the great houses of England, it was filled with carved stone or painted wood. In the American colonial home, it was the place for the family portrait or the carved eagle.
