Copper Backsplash Questions Answered — Everything Buyers Ask Before Ordering

IBRAHIM GULSUN

Most people who find Natuross have the same set of questions before they order. Will it look right in my kitchen? Will it hold up behind the stove? How do I clean it? What happens to the color over time? Can I get my exact size? This article answers those questions directly, in the order buyers typically ask them.

Will it work behind my stove?

Yes. Copper is heat-resistant to temperatures far beyond what any residential stove produces. It does not warp, discolor, or degrade under cooking heat. It is one of the few backsplash materials that is genuinely suited to the stove area rather than merely tolerated there.

The UV-resistant lacquer coating that protects the finish is also heat-stable in normal kitchen conditions. If you are installing behind a commercial-grade range that produces extreme radiant heat, let Ibrahim know — the installation method and panel positioning can be adjusted accordingly.

What happens to the color over time?

Copper develops a patina as it ages. The direction and speed of that development depends on the finish, the environment, and whether the panel is lacquered.

All Natuross panels are coated with a professional-grade UV-resistant lacquer before shipping. This coating significantly slows patina development and locks the finish in the state it was in when the panel left the workshop. A lacquered panel in a normal kitchen environment will hold its finish for years with no treatment required.

If the lacquer is eventually scratched or worn in a specific area, the copper in that area will begin to develop a natural patina — darkening slightly and developing the characteristic warmth of aged copper. This is not a defect. It is the material behaving correctly. Most customers find that a panel with some natural aging looks more interesting than a perfectly uniform surface.

If you want to maintain the original finish precisely, the lacquer can be reapplied. If you prefer to let the panel age naturally, remove the lacquer with a copper-safe solvent and allow the patina to develop on its own.

How do I clean it?

For routine cleaning: a soft cloth with warm soapy water. Wipe the panel down after cooking, particularly if there has been significant splatter. Dry it afterward if there has been significant water contact.

Two things to avoid: acidic cleaners and abrasive pads. Vinegar, lemon juice, and most commercial bathroom cleaners will strip the lacquer and the patina unevenly. Steel wool and abrasive sponges will scratch the copper. A soft cloth or microfiber is always the correct cleaning tool.

For a panel that has been in use for years and has developed some surface buildup, a small amount of mild dish soap on a soft cloth is sufficient for deep cleaning. There is no need for specialist copper cleaners in normal kitchen use.

Can I get my exact size?

Yes. Every Natuross panel is made to the customer’s exact dimensions. There are no standard sizes and no off-the-shelf inventory. If your stove wall measures 43 by 27 inches, that is what gets made. If it is an unusual shape with a cutout for an outlet or a switch, that can be accommodated.

The maximum single-piece size is 77 by 38 inches. Larger installations are assembled from multiple panels with seams placed at natural breaks in the design, so the composition reads as continuous.

How do I choose a design?

The most useful starting point is to look at the existing materials in your kitchen. Wood, stone, and warm colors suggest a nature-inspired or rustic direction — trees, animals, landscapes, botanical subjects. White cabinetry, stainless steel, and clean lines suggest a more structured, contemporary design — geometric compositions, navigational subjects, world maps.

If nothing in the existing catalogue is quite right, a custom design can be built around any reference — a photograph, a sketch, a description, or a subject that matters to you. Custom design work is included in the price of the panel.

How do I choose a finish?

There are fifteen finishes, organized into three material groups: copper finishes (Natural Copper, Brown Copper, Green Copper, Blue Copper, Fire Copper, Black Copper, Copper–Black Details), silver finishes (Silver, Silver–Copper Details, Silver–Black Details, Silver–Gold Details), and gold and brass finishes (Gold/Brass, Antique Gold, Gold–Black Details, Black–Gold Details).

The finish has more influence over the final character of the backsplash than almost any other decision. Natural Copper is warm and bright — the most immediately inviting option. Silver–Copper Details is the most popular finish in the range — a silver-plated background with copper relief areas, creating a sophisticated two-tone effect. Black Copper and Copper–Black Details are the most dramatic options, suited to kitchens where the intention is to make a strong statement.

How does installation work?

Three methods are available: adhesive mount, screw mount, and floating mount. Adhesive mount bonds the panel directly to the wall using construction adhesive or heavy-duty mounting tape — permanent, works on most surfaces. Screw mount uses pre-drilled holes and is the most secure option for large panels. Floating mount holds the panel on standoffs slightly away from the wall, creating a shadow gap and a three-dimensional, gallery-like presence.

What does the order process look like?

After an order is placed, a digital mockup is prepared showing the design at the correct dimensions in the chosen finish, placed into a photograph of your actual kitchen where possible. Nothing goes into production until the mockup is approved. Changes at this stage cost nothing.

When the panel is finished, high-resolution photographs are taken in the workshop and sent for a final review before the piece is packed and shipped. Production takes approximately two weeks. Shipping takes approximately one week. The panel arrives at your door in about three weeks. If the finished piece ever falls short of what was approved, it is remade at no cost.
