How to Order a Custom Copper Backsplash — The Complete Process
IBRAHIM GULSUNShare
Every Natuross copper panel is made to order — your exact dimensions, your chosen design, your chosen finish. There is no stock, no catalogue item pulled from a shelf, no standard size that you trim to fit. The process begins with a conversation and ends with a panel photographed in the workshop before it ships. This guide walks through every step so you know exactly what to expect from first contact to panel on the wall.
Step 1 — Start a Conversation
The process begins with a live chat or a message through the contact page. You do not need measurements, a design idea, or a finish decision before reaching out. A photograph of your kitchen — or even just a description of the space — is enough to start.
Ibrahim responds personally to every inquiry. The first conversation typically covers: the wall dimensions (or a request for you to measure), the cabinet color and countertop material, any design ideas you have in mind, and the finish direction. If you have no design ideas, Ibrahim will suggest options based on the kitchen and your preferences. If you have a specific design in mind — a family crest, a custom scene, a specific motif — describe it and Ibrahim will assess whether and how it can be rendered in copper relief.
There is no obligation at this stage. The conversation is free, and nothing is committed until you approve the design preview and place the order.
Step 2 — Measure Your Wall
Once the conversation has established the general direction, you measure the wall. The measurement guide is simple: width of the space to be covered, height from countertop to the bottom of the upper cabinets (or to the ceiling if there are no upper cabinets), and the location of any outlets, switches, or other interruptions that require cutouts in the panel.
If you are not confident in your measurements, send a straight-on photograph of the wall with a tape measure visible. Ibrahim will extract the dimensions from the photograph and confirm them before production. Rough measurements are enough to start — exact measurements are confirmed before the panel is cut.
If you are ordering a range hood panel, island insert, or sink apron panel in addition to the stove backsplash, all dimensions are collected at this stage so the full set can be designed and produced together.
Step 3 — Design Selection
With dimensions confirmed, the design is selected. You can choose from any existing design in the Natuross collection, request a variation of an existing design, or request a completely original design. All three options are available at no additional cost — the design work is included in the panel price.
Choosing an existing design: Browse the collection and identify a design you want. The design will be scaled to your exact panel dimensions — larger panels give the design more room to breathe; smaller panels require the design to be tightened and simplified slightly. Ibrahim will advise if a specific design needs adjustment for your dimensions.
Requesting a variation: You can request a design from the collection with modifications — a different border, additional elements, a personalization added (name, date, phrase), or elements removed. Describe the variation and Ibrahim will assess what is possible in copper relief.
Requesting an original design: Describe the subject, the mood, and any specific elements you want included. Ibrahim will create a design from scratch. Original designs take slightly longer to develop than existing designs, but there is no additional charge.
Step 4 — The Digital Design Preview
Before production begins, a digital preview of the panel is prepared — a rendering of the exact design at your exact dimensions, showing how the panel will look before anything is made. You see the design, the layout, the proportions, and the detail of the relief work as it will appear on the finished panel.
The preview is the most important step in the process. It answers the question that no product photograph can answer: is this the right design for my panel, at these dimensions? Most customers confirm the preview on the first version. Some request adjustments — a design change, a layout tweak, a personalization added or modified. All revisions are free and the preview is updated until you are satisfied.
Nothing is produced until you approve the design preview. There is no pressure to approve quickly — take the time you need to be certain the design is right.
Step 5 — Order and Payment
Once the design preview is approved, the order is placed. Payment is made through the standard Natuross checkout — the panel is added to the cart at the confirmed price and dimensions, and payment is processed securely through Shopify. The price includes the panel, the design work, the preview, all revisions, photography before shipping, and free shipping across the United States. There are no additional charges after the order is placed.
Step 6 — Production
Production begins immediately after the order is placed. Every panel is made by hand in the Natuross workshop — the copper or brass sheet is cut to the exact dimensions, the design is hand-hammered into the metal using traditional relief techniques, and the patina is applied by hand using chemical treatments and heat. The process takes approximately two weeks from order to completion.
The hand-hammering process is the most time-intensive part of production. Each element of the design is worked individually into the metal surface, creating the three-dimensional relief that gives Natuross panels their depth and character. No two panels are identical — the hand process introduces subtle variation that makes each panel unique even when the same design is repeated.
Step 7 — Photography Before Shipping
Before the panel ships, it is photographed in the workshop. The photographs are sent to you for final confirmation — you see the actual panel, in the actual finish, before it leaves the workshop. This is the final quality check and the final opportunity to confirm that the panel meets your expectations.
In the rare case that the panel does not meet the standard — a finish inconsistency, a production issue — it is corrected before shipping. The panel does not ship until you confirm the photographs.
Step 8 — Shipping and Delivery
Shipping takes approximately one week across the United States. The panel is packaged carefully to protect the copper surface and the relief detail during transit. Delivered to your door in about three weeks from order — two weeks production, one week shipping.
Free shipping is included in the panel price for all US destinations. No additional shipping charges, no customs fees, no surprises.
Step 9 — Installation
Full installation instructions are included with every order. Most customers install their own panel using construction adhesive, screws, or hanging wire — no professional installation required. The panel arrives cut to your exact dimensions, ready to mount. Installation typically takes under an hour.
If you have questions about installation before or during the process, start a live chat — Ibrahim will advise on the best method for your specific wall and situation.
