How to Install a Copper Backsplash — Three Methods, Step by Step

IBRAHIM GULSUN

Installing a copper backsplash is one of the most straightforward home improvement projects a homeowner can undertake. Unlike tile, which requires cutting, grouting, and professional skill, a Natuross copper panel arrives cut to your exact dimensions and ready to mount. Most customers install their own panel in under an hour using basic tools. This guide covers all three installation methods so you can choose the one that suits your wall and your situation.

Full installation instructions are included with every Natuross order. If you have questions about your specific wall or situation, start a live chat before you begin — Ibrahim responds personally and can advise on the best method for your kitchen.

Before You Begin: What to Check

Wall surface: The wall behind your stove should be clean, dry, and free of grease. Wipe it down with a degreaser and let it dry completely before installation. Adhesive will not bond properly to a greasy surface.

Existing tile: If you are installing over existing tile, the tile surface must be clean and firmly bonded to the wall. Loose or cracked tiles should be repaired or removed before installation. Construction adhesive bonds well to tile surfaces.

Drywall: Standard drywall is a suitable surface for all three installation methods. Painted drywall is fine. Unpainted drywall should be primed before adhesive installation.

Panel orientation: Before installation, hold the panel up to the wall and confirm the design is oriented correctly — right side up, design centered where you want it. Mark the top edge of the panel position lightly with a pencil.

Method 1: Construction Adhesive (Most Common)

Construction adhesive is the most common installation method. It creates a permanent, strong bond and requires no visible hardware. This is the method most Natuross customers use.

What you need:

  • Construction adhesive (Liquid Nails Heavy Duty or equivalent)
  • Caulk gun
  • Painter’s tape
  • A level
  • A soft cloth

Steps:

  1. Clean the wall surface thoroughly with degreaser. Let dry completely.
  2. Apply construction adhesive to the back of the copper panel in a zigzag pattern, keeping adhesive 1 inch from all edges to prevent squeeze-out.
  3. Press the panel firmly against the wall, starting from the bottom edge and working upward.
  4. Use a level to confirm the panel is straight. Adjust immediately if needed — adhesive allows repositioning for the first few minutes.
  5. Apply painter’s tape across the panel and onto the adjacent cabinets or wall to hold the panel in position while the adhesive cures. Leave tape in place for 24 hours.
  6. Remove tape after 24 hours. The adhesive is fully cured and the panel is permanently bonded.

Notes: Construction adhesive installation is permanent. The panel can be removed, but it requires effort and may damage the wall surface behind it. If you anticipate needing to remove the panel in the future, use Method 2 or Method 3 instead.

Method 2: Screws (Most Secure)

Screw installation is the most secure method and allows the panel to be removed cleanly in the future. The screw heads are visible but can be chosen to complement the panel finish — copper-colored screws for copper panels, brass screws for gold panels.

What you need:

  • Screws appropriate for your wall type (drywall screws for drywall, masonry screws for tile or concrete)
  • A drill
  • A level
  • Decorative screw caps or washers in a matching finish (optional)

Steps:

  1. Hold the panel against the wall and mark the screw hole positions with a pencil. Use at least 4 screws — one near each corner — and additional screws along the edges for larger panels.
  2. Drill pilot holes at the marked positions.
  3. Hold the panel in position and drive screws through the panel into the wall. Do not overtighten — the panel should sit flush against the wall without the screw heads pulling into the copper surface.
  4. Use a level to confirm the panel is straight before driving the final screws.
  5. Add decorative screw caps or washers if desired to finish the screw heads.

Notes: Screw holes in the panel are pre-drilled at Natuross if requested. Mention screw installation when ordering and the preferred screw hole positions will be confirmed before production.

Method 3: Hanging Wire (Easiest to Remove)

Hanging wire installation suspends the panel from picture-hanging hardware mounted on the wall, exactly like hanging a large framed artwork. This is the easiest method to remove and reinstall cleanly — ideal for renters, for panels used as wall art in dining rooms or living rooms, or for anyone who wants the flexibility to reposition the panel in the future.

What you need:

  • Heavy-duty picture hanging wire (rated for the weight of the panel)
  • Two D-ring or sawtooth hangers with screws
  • Two wall hooks or picture rail hooks rated for the panel weight
  • A level
  • A drill or hammer
  • Wall anchors appropriate for your wall type

Steps:

  1. Attach two D-ring hangers to the back of the panel — one on each side, positioned about one quarter of the way down from the top edge. Screw them firmly into the copper panel edge or attach to a backing strip if the panel edge is too thin.
  2. Thread hanging wire through both D-rings and twist securely, leaving a taut horizontal span of wire across the back of the panel.
  3. Hold the panel against the wall at the desired position and mark the two wall hook locations with a pencil, using a level to ensure they are even.
  4. Install wall anchors and hooks at the marked positions.
  5. Hang the panel on the hooks via the wire. Adjust left and right until level.

Notes: Hanging wire is best suited to decorative wall panels and art installations rather than functional stove backsplashes, where the panel needs to sit flush against the wall with no gap. For stove backsplash installation, Method 1 or Method 2 is recommended. Contact Ibrahim via live chat to confirm the best hanging hardware for your specific panel size and weight.

Handling Outlets and Switches

Outlets and switches on the backsplash wall are handled with cutouts in the copper panel. The panel arrives with precise cutouts at the exact location of each outlet or switch. During installation, turn off the circuit breaker for the outlets on the wall before beginning. After the panel is installed, remove the outlet cover plates, slide the panel into position over the outlets, and reinstall the cover plates over the cutouts. The cover plates hold the panel edges around the outlet in place.

Sealing the Edges

After installation, apply a thin bead of clear silicone caulk along the bottom edge of the panel where it meets the countertop, and along any edges that meet adjacent cabinets or walls. This prevents moisture and grease from getting behind the panel and creates a clean, finished edge. Smooth the caulk with a wet finger and let cure for 24 hours before cooking.

After Installation: First Cleaning

After installation and caulk curing, wipe the panel surface with a soft cloth dampened with mild soap and water to remove any fingerprints or handling marks from installation. Dry immediately with a clean soft cloth. Do not use abrasive pads, vinegar, lemon juice, bleach, ammonia, or commercial spray cleaners on the lacquer surface.
