How Heavy Is a Copper Backsplash Panel?

IBRAHIM GULSUN

Weight is a practical question that matters for installation — it determines whether the wall can support the panel, which installation method is appropriate, and whether one person can handle the installation alone. This article gives the exact weight figures and explains what they mean in practice.

The Weight Figure

A Natuross copper panel weighs approximately 2.1 lb per square foot. This is the combined weight of the 24 gauge copper or brass sheet, the aluminum composite backing, and the lacquer finish.

To calculate the weight of your specific panel, multiply the width in feet by the height in feet, then multiply by 2.1.

Some common panel sizes and their approximate weights:

  • 30 × 24 inches (2.5 × 2 ft = 5 sq ft) — approximately 10.5 lbs
  • 36 × 24 inches (3 × 2 ft = 6 sq ft) — approximately 12.6 lbs
  • 48 × 30 inches (4 × 2.5 ft = 10 sq ft) — approximately 21 lbs
  • 60 × 36 inches (5 × 3 ft = 15 sq ft) — approximately 31.5 lbs

What This Means for Installation

A standard stove wall panel — 36 × 24 inches, approximately 12.6 lbs — is well within the load capacity of a standard drywall wall with construction adhesive or screws into studs. No special wall reinforcement is needed for panels of this size.

Larger panels — 60 inches wide or taller than 36 inches — are heavier and benefit from screw installation into studs rather than adhesive alone. For very large panels, two people are recommended for installation — one to hold the panel in position while the other secures it.

For hanging wire installation, use hardware rated for at least twice the panel weight. A 15 lb panel should be hung on hardware rated for 30 lbs or more. D-ring hangers and picture rail hooks rated for the appropriate load are available at any hardware store.

Why the Panel Is Lightweight for Its Size

The aluminum composite backing — the rigid support panel behind the copper sheet — is significantly lighter than a solid metal or wood backing of the same size would be. Aluminum composite is used in architectural cladding and signage precisely because it provides rigidity without adding significant weight. The result is a panel that is rigid and flat but light enough to be handled and installed without specialist equipment.

At approximately ¼ inch (6mm) total thickness and 2.1 lb per square foot, a Natuross copper panel is lighter than a comparable ceramic tile installation of the same area, which typically weighs 3–5 lb per square foot including adhesive and grout.

Can One Person Install It?

For panels up to approximately 36 × 30 inches and around 15 lbs, one person can typically manage the installation — holding the panel in position and securing it with adhesive or screws. For larger panels, two people make the job significantly easier and reduce the risk of the panel shifting during installation.
