Hemlock Tree Copper Panel — Hand-Hammered Pacific Northwest & Forest Wall Art

The Western Hemlock is the state tree of Washington. It is not related to the poison hemlock that killed Socrates. The tree is named for the smell of its crushed needles — which reminded early settlers of the plant. The tree is entirely harmless. The settlers were wrong.

A copper wall panel of the Hemlock — the delicate flat needles, the gracefully drooping branch tips, the weeping leader of the most elegantly graceful and most distinctively Pacific Northwest of the North American conifers — hand-hammered in real copper sheet by our family using traditional chasing and repoussé techniques passed through generations. The delicate needles and the gracefully drooping form are the composition: those feathery flat needles rendered in dimensional metalwork, the drooping branch tips and weeping leader built up in fine relief, the quiet patience of a tree that grows in near-total darkness, on the tops of fallen giants, and outlasts almost everything around it. In Green Copper or Natural Copper, the deep forest-green tones echo the real tree. Every needle, every drooping tip, every detail a separate hammer stroke, thousands of them. Over 10,000 pieces made.

The Western Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) is the state tree of Washington and the most commercially important timber tree in the Pacific Northwest — used for construction lumber, pulpwood, and the finest paper. It is the most shade-tolerant large conifer in North America — it can germinate and grow in near-total darkness, on the tops of fallen nurse logs, creating the “nurse log” phenomenon that defines old-growth Pacific Northwest forests. The Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is the state tree of Pennsylvania and one of the longest-lived trees in the Eastern forest — specimens over 500 years old have been recorded. Both species are under severe threat from the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid — an invasive insect that has killed millions of hemlocks in the Eastern US. The most shade-tolerant, most commercially essential, and most ecologically threatened conifer in North America.

④ Custom or personalized design — reach out
A Western Hemlock in a Pacific Northwest old-growth forest scene with nurse logs and ferns, an Eastern Hemlock in an Appalachian stream valley, a Hemlock in winter with snow on the drooping branches, a Hemlock grove composition, a Mountain Hemlock (Tsuga mertensiana) in a high-altitude alpine scene — or a completely different Pacific Northwest conifer: Douglas fir, Sitka spruce, Western red cedar, or anything that matters to you. Or a personalized panel: your family name designed as a full copper composition, with the Hemlock as the central subject, in the same finish. Not a sign — a piece of art that carries your name. Same process, completely custom. Just reach out.

Complete the Look

A copper panel above your fireplace. The Hemlock, larger, above the mantel in Green Copper. The most gracefully drooping and most forest-authentic focal point in the conifer range — the state tree of Washington, at full scale in copper, above the fire.

Your family name in copper. Not a sign — a designed panel. Your surname hand-hammered in relief, with the Hemlock as the central subject, in the same finish as the main panel. It goes by the front door or above the entryway. Every person who enters sees it first.

A Pacific Northwest forest scene. The Hemlock in a coordinated Pacific Northwest composition — a Douglas fir, a Western red cedar, a Sitka spruce — in the same finish. The home with a consistent visual language of the old-growth forest and the Pacific Northwest landscape.

A living room or dining room panel. The Hemlock above the main wall — the tree that grows in near-total darkness on the tops of fallen giants — in Green Copper or Natural Copper, on the wall of the room that faces the forest or the mountain view.

If you're thinking about more than one piece: reach out before you order. We'll design everything together and give you project pricing for the full set.

Perfect For

  • Copper kitchen backsplash & stove backsplash — Natuross is trusted across the US for hand-hammered copper kitchen backsplashes. The Hemlock above the stove brings the Pacific Northwest old-growth forest and the state tree of Washington into the heart of the home.
  • Pacific Northwest, Washington, or Oregon home — the state tree of Washington — the most commercially important and most ecologically defining conifer of the Pacific Northwest — on the wall of a home that belongs to that landscape
  • Pennsylvania or Eastern US home — the Eastern Hemlock, state tree of Pennsylvania — one of the longest-lived trees in the Eastern forest, specimens over 500 years old — on the wall of a home that carries that heritage
  • Forest, botanical, or conservation enthusiast — for the person who understands that the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid has killed millions of hemlocks in the Eastern US — and that a panel on the wall is also a record of what the forest was
  • Green Copper or Natural Copper — most popular finishes for the Hemlock — Green Copper echoes the deep forest-green of the Hemlock’s needles in the shade of the old-growth canopy, Natural Copper echoes the warm tawny tones of the Hemlock in filtered afternoon light

  • Screw mount — for large, heavy, or outdoor panels. Ships with screws and decorative caps included.
  • Hanging wire — for wall art, signs, and removable installations.

For multi-piece panels: install the central piece first, borders second.
