The Western Hemlock is the state tree of Washington. It is not related to the poison hemlock that killed Socrates. The tree is named for the smell of its crushed needles — which reminded early settlers of the plant. The tree is entirely harmless. The settlers were wrong.

The Western Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) is the state tree of Washington and the most commercially important timber tree in the Pacific Northwest — used for construction lumber, pulpwood, and the finest paper. It is the most shade-tolerant large conifer in North America — it can germinate and grow in near-total darkness, on the tops of fallen nurse logs, creating the “nurse log” phenomenon that defines old-growth Pacific Northwest forests. The Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is the state tree of Pennsylvania and one of the longest-lived trees in the Eastern forest — specimens over 500 years old have been recorded. Both species are under severe threat from the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid — an invasive insect that has killed millions of hemlocks in the Eastern US. The most shade-tolerant, most commercially essential, and most ecologically threatened conifer in North America.
