Hawthorn Tree Copper Panel — Hand-Hammered Celtic & Botanical Wall Art
In Ireland, a lone hawthorn standing in a field is called a fairy tree. Roads have been rerouted around them. Construction projects have been cancelled. In 1999, a motorway in County Clare was redesigned at significant cost to avoid cutting a single hawthorn. The tree was not moved. The road was.
A copper wall panel of the Hawthorn — the white May blossom, the red haws, the thorny branches of the most mythologically charged and most deeply rooted in European folklore of all the hedgerow trees — hand-hammered in real copper sheet by our family using traditional chasing and repoussé techniques passed through generations. The white blossom and the thorny branches are the composition: those clouds of white flowers rendered in dimensional metalwork, the dark thorny branches and red haws built up in fine relief, the ancient authority of a tree that has been guarding the threshold between the human world and the otherworld for as long as people have lived in these islands. In Natural Copper or Fire Copper, the warm tones echo the haws in autumn. Every flower, every thorn, every detail a separate hammer stroke, thousands of them. Over 10,000 pieces made.
The Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) is one of the most important wildlife trees in the British Isles — its dense thorny branches provide nesting sites for over 300 species of insects and the berries feed birds through the winter. It is the most common hedgerow tree in Britain and Ireland — planted for centuries to mark field boundaries and provide stock-proof barriers. The May blossom — which appears in May — was the central symbol of Beltane, the Celtic festival of summer’s beginning. It was considered deeply unlucky to bring hawthorn blossom indoors — the smell of the flowers contains trimethylamine, a compound also produced by decaying flesh, which may explain the ancient association with death and the otherworld. Hawthorn berry (Crataegus) is one of the most widely used herbal heart remedies in the world — used in traditional medicine for over 2,000 years. The most ecologically essential, most mythologically charged, and most medicinally significant hedgerow tree in Europe.

A Hawthorn in full May blossom, a lone fairy tree in a field at dusk, a Hawthorn in autumn with red haws and turning leaves, a Hawthorn in a Celtic Beltane composition with knotwork and the May Queen, a Hawthorn hedgerow scene with birds and wildlife — or a completely different Celtic sacred tree: hazel, rowan, oak, ash, or anything that matters to you. Or a personalized panel: your family name designed as a full copper composition, with the Hawthorn as guardian, in the same finish. Not a sign — a piece of art that carries your name. Same process, completely custom. Just reach out.

Complete the Look
A copper panel above your fireplace. The Hawthorn, larger, blossom spanning above the mantel in Natural Copper. The most mythologically charged and most ecologically essential focal point in the hedgerow range — the tree that roads have been rerouted to avoid, at full scale in copper, above the fire.
A lone fairy tree composition. The Hawthorn standing alone in a field — the fairy tree, the threshold guardian, the tree that no one cuts — in Natural Copper or Fire Copper, above the main wall of the home that carries that reverence or that heritage.
Your family name in copper. Not a sign — a designed panel. Your surname hand-hammered in relief, with the Hawthorn as guardian, in the same finish as the main panel. It goes by the front door or above the entryway. Every person who enters sees it first.
A living room or dining room panel. A coordinated Celtic sacred tree scene — a hazel, a rowan, an oak — in the same finish as the Hawthorn. The home with a consistent visual language of the Celtic woodland and the sacred trees of the Irish and British tradition.
If you're thinking about more than one piece: reach out before you order. We'll design everything together and give you project pricing for the full set.
