Hackberry Tree Copper Panel — Hand-Hammered Prairie & Wildlife Wall Art

The Hackberry is the tree that survives everything. Drought. Flood. Wind. Urban pollution. Compacted soil. It grows where other trees die. And every autumn, it feeds 40 species of birds with its berries. It asks for nothing. It gives everything.

A copper wall panel of the Hackberry — the distinctive corky warty bark, the elm-like serrated leaves, the small dark berries of the most ecologically generous and most underappreciated native tree of the Great Plains and the Eastern US — hand-hammered in real copper sheet by our family using traditional chasing and repoussé techniques passed through generations. The distinctive corky bark and the elm-like leaves are the composition: that extraordinary warty bark rendered in dimensional metalwork, the serrated leaves and small berries built up in fine relief, the quiet abundance of a tree that has been feeding birds, butterflies, and people for thousands of years without ever being celebrated for it. In Natural Copper or Brown Copper, the warm tawny-brown tones echo the corky bark. Every ridge of bark, every detail a separate hammer stroke, thousands of them. Over 10,000 pieces made.

The Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) is native to a vast range across North America — from Quebec to Florida, from the Atlantic coast to the Rocky Mountains. Its distinctive corky, warty bark is caused by a harmless fungal interaction unique in the North American tree flora. The berries — small, dark purple, and sweet — are eaten by over 40 species of birds, including the American Robin, Cedar Waxwing, and Northern Mockingbird. The berries were an important food source for Native American peoples — eaten fresh, dried, and ground into a paste mixed with fat and corn. The Hackberry Emperor butterfly (Asterocampa celtis) depends entirely on the Hackberry for its larval food — one of the few butterflies named for a single tree species. The most ecologically generous, most climatically resilient, and most underappreciated native tree in North America.

Contact us with your wall dimensions for an exact quote — we'll design the full composition and send a digital preview before any commitment.

④ Custom or personalized design — reach out
A Hackberry in autumn with berries and Cedar Waxwings feeding, a Hackberry with the Hackberry Emperor butterfly, a Hackberry in a Great Plains windbreak composition, a Hackberry in winter showing the full corky bark silhouette, a Hackberry with Native American berry-gathering scene — or a completely different Great Plains native tree: cottonwood, bur oak, green ash, or anything that matters to you. Or a personalized panel: your family name or farm name designed as a full copper composition, with the Hackberry as the central subject, in the same finish. Not a sign — a piece of art that carries your name. Same process, completely custom. Just reach out.

Complete the Look

A copper panel above your fireplace. The Hackberry, larger, above the mantel in Natural Copper. The most ecologically generous and most quietly extraordinary focal point in the prairie tree range — the tree that asks for nothing and gives everything, at full scale in copper, above the fire.

Your family or farm name in copper. Not a sign — a designed panel. Your name hand-hammered in relief, with the Hackberry as the central subject, in the same finish as the main panel. It goes at the farm entrance or above the front door. Every person who arrives sees it first.

A wildlife garden or birding space panel. The Hackberry above the main wall — the tree that feeds 40 species of birds — in Natural Copper, on the wall of the room that faces the garden where those birds come to feed.

A living room or dining room panel. A coordinated Great Plains native tree scene — a cottonwood, a bur oak, a green ash — in the same finish as the Hackberry. The home with a consistent visual language of the prairie and the native tree landscape.

If you're thinking about more than one piece: reach out before you order. We'll design everything together and give you project pricing for the full set.

Perfect For

  • Copper kitchen backsplash & stove backsplash — Natuross is trusted across the US for hand-hammered copper kitchen backsplashes. The Hackberry above the stove brings the most ecologically generous native tree in North America and the tree that feeds 40 species of birds into the heart of the home.
  • Great Plains, Midwestern, or prairie home — the native tree of the Great Plains — the tree that survives drought, flood, wind, and urban pollution — on the wall of a home that belongs to that landscape
  • Wildlife enthusiast, birder, or native plant gardener — for the person who understands that a tree that feeds 40 species of birds is more valuable than any ornamental — and whose walls should reflect that understanding
  • Urban forester, landscape professional, or arborist — the tree that grows where other trees die — on the wall of the office where that knowledge is put to work
  • Natural Copper or Brown Copper — most popular finishes for the Hackberry — Natural Copper echoes the warm tawny tones of the fresh corky bark in spring light, Brown Copper echoes the deep brown of the aged bark and the ripened berries in autumn

Installation & Care

Installation — three methods:

  • Adhesive — stick directly over existing tile, drywall, wood, or stone using any standard construction adhesive. Most popular method. Most customers install in under an hour.
  • Screw mount — for large, heavy, or outdoor panels. Ships with screws and decorative caps included.
  • Hanging wire — for wall art, signs, and removable installations.

For multi-piece panels: install the central piece first, borders second.

Care:

Wipe with a soft damp cloth. For grease or cooking splashes, warm water and mild dish soap. No polishing, waxing, or re-sealing — ever. The finish you receive is the finish it keeps.
