The true firs (Abies spp.) comprise approximately 50 species distributed across the mountain forests of the Northern Hemisphere — from the Balsam Fir of the Canadian boreal forest to the Noble Fir of the Pacific Northwest to the Silver Fir of the European Alps. They are distinguished from all other conifers by their upright cones — which disintegrate on the tree rather than falling whole. The Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea) produces the most aromatic resin of any North American tree — the source of Canada balsam, used for centuries in optical instruments and microscopy. The Noble Fir (Abies procera) produces the most architecturally perfect Christmas tree in the world — its strong, widely spaced branches hold ornaments at perfect angles.
