The Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus) is the tallest tree in the Eastern United States — old-growth specimens reached 200 feet or more, though most old-growth groves were logged in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is the state tree of both Maine and Michigan. The White Pine is the Tree of Peace of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy — the Great Law of Peace was symbolized by a White Pine, with its roots extending in four directions and an eagle perched at the top.
