The dragonfly catches 95% of the prey it pursues — the highest hunting success rate of any predator on earth, including the lion (25%) and the great white shark (50%). It can fly in all six directions — forward, backward, up, down, left, right — and hover perfectly still. Its compound eyes cover nearly its entire head, giving it almost 360-degree vision. In Japan, the dragonfly (tombo) is a symbol of victory, strength, and the samurai spirit — Japan was once called Akitsushima, the Island of the Dragonfly. In Native American tradition, the dragonfly is a symbol of transformation and the souls of the departed.
