The chipmunk (Tamias — “the storer”) is named for its defining behavior. It builds underground burrow systems up to 30 feet long with separate chambers for sleeping, food storage, and waste — a fully organized home beneath the forest floor. A single chipmunk can gather and store up to 8 pounds of food for winter. It enters a state of torpor — not true hibernation — waking every few days to eat from its cache. There are 25 species of chipmunk in North America — and one in Asia. In Native American tradition, the chipmunk's stripes were given by the bear — scratched into its back as it ran away.
