Beetle Copper Panel — Hand-Hammered Nature & Egyptian Scarab Wall Art

When asked what his study of nature had revealed about God, the biologist J.B.S. Haldane replied: ‘An inordinate fondness for beetles.’ There are 400,000 species. One in four animals on earth is a beetle.

A copper wall panel of the beetle — the hardened elytra, the iridescent colors, the geometric precision of the most species-rich and most evolutionarily successful order of animals on earth — hand-hammered in real copper sheet by our family using traditional chasing and repoussé techniques passed through generations. The elytra and the iridescent form are the composition: those hardened wing covers rendered in dimensional metalwork, the geometric precision and armored form built up in fine relief, the ancient authority of an animal that has been perfecting this design for 300 million years. In Natural Copper or Fire Copper, the warm metallic tones echo the Scarab, the Jewel Beetle, and the Stag Beetle. Every detail a separate hammer stroke, thousands of them. Over 10,000 pieces made.

The Scarab Beetle was the most sacred symbol in ancient Egypt — the god Khepri, who rolled the sun across the sky, was depicted as a scarab. Scarab amulets were placed over the hearts of mummies to protect the soul in the afterlife. The Hercules Beetle can carry 850 times its own body weight — the strongest animal on earth relative to size. The Stag Beetle’s mandibles — which look like antlers — are used in combat for females, exactly like the antlers of a stag. The Jewel Beetle (Buprestidae) produces the most iridescent colors in the animal kingdom — used in jewelry and decorative art for thousands of years. Beetles have existed for 300 million years — they survived the extinction event that killed the dinosaurs. The most ancient, most diverse, and most indestructible order of animals on earth.

Complete the Look

A Scarab Egyptian composition. The Scarab — Khepri, the god who rolls the sun across the sky — in a full Egyptian composition with cartouche, lotus, and hieroglyphs, in Gold/Brass. The most historically specific and most symbolically charged beetle panel in the catalog. Above the main wall of the home that carries that heritage or that reverence.

A copper panel above your fireplace. The beetle, larger, elytra spanning above the mantel. The most ancient and most indestructible focal point in the insect range — the animal that survived the extinction event that killed the dinosaurs, at full scale in copper, above the fire.

A study, library, or naturalist space panel. The beetle above the bookcase — the animal that prompted J.B.S. Haldane’s most famous remark — in Natural Copper, on the wall of the room where the natural world is studied and honored.

A living room or dining room panel. A coordinated natural history scene — a dragonfly, a butterfly, a moth — in the same finish as the beetle. The home with a consistent visual language of the natural world and the cabinet of curiosities.

If you're thinking about more than one piece: reach out before you order. We'll design everything together and give you project pricing for the full set.

  • Screw mount — for large, heavy, or outdoor panels. Ships with screws and decorative caps included.
  • Hanging wire — for wall art, signs, and removable installations.

For multi-piece panels: install the central piece first, borders second.
