Sunburst Copper Backsplash — Hand-Hammered Sun & Celtic Border Kitchen & Fireplace Wall Art
The sunburst is the oldest symbol in human art — older than writing, older than the wheel, older than any civilization that has left a record. The sun radiating outward from its center appears on the cave paintings of the Paleolithic, on the megalithic stones of Newgrange, on the gold discs of the Bronze Age, on the facades of every cathedral, temple, and palace that has ever been built to face the light. The Celtic border that frames this panel adds the specific tradition of the Irish and Scottish decorative arts — the knotwork that has no beginning and no end, the interlace that represents the eternal continuity of all things. In copper, the sunburst and the Celtic border together make the most formally complete and most symbolically universal backsplash in the catalog.
A hand-hammered copper backsplash and wall art piece of a bold central sun with flowing rays, framed by an intricate Celtic knotwork border, on a hand-hammered background in raised relief — the sun centered in the composition, the rays radiating outward, the Celtic border completing the frame, the hammered field adding depth and texture — built up from a flat copper sheet one hammer stroke at a time by our family using traditional chasing and repoussé techniques passed through generations. The sun, the rays, the Celtic border, and the copper field are the composition: the universal symbol as the subject, the cultural tradition as the frame, the warm metal as the ground that holds both. Available in all 15 finishes. Over 10,000 pieces made.
The sunburst — the radiating sun disc — appears in the art of every culture that has ever worshipped the sun: the Aten disc of ancient Egypt, the Sol Invictus of the Roman Empire, the Tonatiuh of the Aztec sun stone, the Surya of the Hindu tradition, the rising sun of the Japanese imperial tradition. In the Celtic decorative arts tradition, the sun disc appears on the Trundholm sun chariot (Denmark, c. 1400 BC), on the gold lunulae of the Irish Bronze Age, and on the carved stone faces of the Gaulish sun god Belenus. The Celtic knotwork border — the interlace pattern that appears on the illuminated pages of the Book of Kells (c. 800 AD), on the high crosses of Ireland, and on the carved stone panels of the Pictish tradition — adds the most specifically Irish and Scottish decorative frame to the most universally recognized solar symbol. In copper, the combination is the most formally complete and most cross-culturally resonant geometric backsplash in the catalog.

Installation & Care
Installation & Care
Installation — three methods:
- Adhesive — stick directly over existing tile, drywall, wood, or stone using any standard construction adhesive. Most popular method. Most customers install in under an hour.
- Screw mount — for large, heavy, or outdoor panels. Ships with screws and decorative caps included.
- Hanging wire — for wall art, signs, and removable installations.
For multi-piece panels: install the central piece first, borders second.
Care:
Wipe with a soft damp cloth. For grease or cooking splashes, warm water and mild dish soap. No polishing, waxing, or re-sealing — ever. The finish you receive is the finish it keeps.
