Birds & Blossoms Brass Backsplash — Hand-Hammered Floral Kitchen & Wall Art

Birds on flowering branches is the defining subject of East Asian decorative art. The Chinese called it hua niao — flower and bird. It appears in Song Dynasty silk painting, in Japanese Rimpa school screens, in Korean celadon ceramics, in Vietnamese lacquerwork, in Persian miniature painting. Every culture that has ever watched a bird land on a flowering branch has understood that this is one of the most beautiful things that happens in the natural world.

A hand-hammered brass backsplash of birds resting on flowering branches — the birds and the blossoms rendered in dimensional metalwork, the flowers open and full, the birds perched with the ease of creatures entirely at home in the branches — made by our family using traditional chasing and repoussé techniques passed through generations. The base material is real brass, silver-plated to create the luminous background, with the raised relief elements left in their natural gold-tone brass — the birds and the blossoms emerging in warm gold against the cool silver field. Every petal, every feather, every branch a separate hammer stroke, thousands of them. Over 10,000 pieces made.

The bird-and-flower composition — hua niao in Chinese, kacho in Japanese — is one of the four classical subjects of East Asian painting, alongside landscape, figure, and bamboo. It has been the most continuously practiced and most universally admired subject in Chinese painting since the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD). The Song Dynasty emperor Huizong — himself a painter of extraordinary skill — elevated bird-and-flower painting to the highest level of court art. In Japan, the Rimpa school masters Ogata Kōrin and Sakai Hōitsu made birds on flowering branches the defining image of Japanese decorative art. In the Western tradition, the same subject appears in Meissen porcelain, in Delftware tiles, in English chinoiserie wallpaper, in French toile de Jouy. The bird on the flowering branch is the image that every culture, in every century, has found beautiful.

Complete the Look

A full garden kitchen. Birds and blossoms above the stove, the flowering branches extending across every wall, the range hood clad in the same Silver–Gold finish with the blossoms climbing the sides — the kitchen that feels like a Japanese garden brought indoors.

A range hood in matching Silver–Gold. The flowering branches rising from the backsplash up the hood front and sides — the blossoms framing the hood, the birds perched at the top. The detail that makes the hood disappear into the composition.

A bedroom or bathroom feature wall. Birds and blossoms at full wall scale in Silver–Gold — the most serene and most luminous nature composition in the catalog — on the wall of the room where the day begins and ends.

A personalized floral panel. Your family name worked into the flowering branch composition — the letters formed from the branches themselves, the blossoms growing from the letterforms. The most botanically integrated and most personally meaningful name panel in the catalog.

  • Screw mount — for large, heavy, or outdoor panels. Ships with screws and decorative caps included.
  • Hanging wire — for wall art, signs, and removable installations.

For multi-piece panels: install the central piece first, borders second.
