The bird-and-flower composition — hua niao in Chinese, kacho in Japanese — is one of the four classical subjects of East Asian painting, alongside landscape, figure, and bamboo. It has been the most continuously practiced and most universally admired subject in Chinese painting since the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD). The Song Dynasty emperor Huizong — himself a painter of extraordinary skill — elevated bird-and-flower painting to the highest level of court art. In Japan, the Rimpa school masters Ogata Kōrin and Sakai Hōitsu made birds on flowering branches the defining image of Japanese decorative art.
